Video KLIA Customs stop ivory, drug smugglers

SEPANG: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs officers foiled three attempts to smuggle in ivory and drugs worth more than RM1.68 million in separate cases recently. In the first case, 101kg of ivory worth over RM1.01million were confiscated while 58kg of ivory worth RM580,000 were seized in the second case. KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said two men from Vietnam were detained on Feb 26 in the first case. “The men were arrested at the arrival hall after Customs officers detected suspicious items when scanning their luggage. Our checks found that 18 pieces of ivory were hidden inside the luggage. Preliminary investigations showed that the suspects entered Malaysia through Luanda and Addis Ababa. “Ivory is a prohibited item under the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008. The item cannot be imported to the country without a permit from the Wildlife and National Parks Department,” he said.
